The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy

As of April 2, 2020 the Government of Canada has released some details on how to access the subsidy.

Highlights:

The 75% wage subsidy is eligible to individuals, taxable corporations, and partnerships consisting of eligible employers as well as non-profit organizations and registered charities. These employers have to attest to having experienced at least a 30% decrease in their revenue.

The subsidy amount for each employee is based on eligible earnings paid between March 15 and June 6, 2020 and will be the greater of:

- 75% of the amount of earning paid, up to a maximum of $847 per week; and

- the amount of earnings paid, up to a maximum of $847 per week or 75% of the employee's pre-crisis weekly earnings paid, whichever is less.

How to Apply:

Eligible employers will be able to apply through CRA's My Business Account portal as well as a web-based application. So if you do not have a My Business Account set-up, you can use the portal to apply. There are more details about the application process that will be made available shortly.

The 10% Wage may still be available to employers but NOT in addition to the 75%.

Employers that are not eligible for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy would still be able to furlough employees. Then the employees would be able to collect the $2,000 Canadian Emergency Response Benefit.
